It’s a cool morning in Wa in early 1965. Young Ama is getting ready to leave home to go to the market with her mother. Her hair in neat braids, her eyes bright and her dress vibrant, she’s excited to get going and beat the midday sun. With two baskets in hand to tote back everything they knew they want to buy, they’re off. Ama especially loves these baskets — handwoven by a woman living nearby, they are sturdy and colourful and remind her of these special moments with her mother.

Little did she know that at that same time, a company in Sweden was about to make a change that would mean her granddaughter would never share this same experience. Designed by the engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin, and patented by Celloplast, the single-use plastic bag was about to take over the world.
